RS1

Even Rockets Can Be Simple

RS1 was developed for the high-cadence, no-fuss future of orbital launches. We break the trade-off between cost, reliability and flexibility.

RS1 uses a simple metallic fairing to shield the payload from aerodynamic buffeting and heating during ascent. Internally, the fairing is provisioned with acoustic protection. The fairing is a two-part assembly, which separates along a longitudinal seam. Non-pyrotechnic devices are used for fairing separation, which limits shock loads. The fairing is jettisoned after the aero heating rate is reduced below the required level.

Deployable

From day one, RS1 was designed for deployability. Each stage of the rocket is sized to fit in standard shipping containers. This means RS1 can be moved easily by air, land, or sea to a desired launch site. The vehicle is powered by LOx and RP-1 or Jet-A, available at airfields worldwide. RS1 can be readied for launch in less time, with less people, and with a smaller footprint.

GS0 is our deployable ground system that turns any flat concrete pad into an orbital launch site.

E2 Engines

Our engine is intentionally boring.

E2 is a LOx/RP, gas generator cycle, turbopump-fed engine– tried-and-true choices that enable design simplicity and reliability. 9x E2 engines power Stage 1 and 1x E2 engine powers Stage 2. Designed, manufactured, and tested in-house, E2 exemplifies the ABL design philosophy. The Saturn V flew with gas generator cycle engines, and so does RS1. ABL intentionally chooses mature architectures to minimize development time and scope, freeing us to obsessively focus on design for manufacturing and operations.

We combine traditional and additive manufacturing for a purpose-built approach. For components that require complex internal fluid passageways – including our E2 thrust chamber and turbopumps – we 3D print near-net parts in high performance alloys and post-machine them to completion. For parts that don’t, we use well established forging and machining methods to optimize cost, lead time, and reliability. This simplicity results in an engine that can be rapidly manufactured and assembled to meet our customers’ needs.
